Description

Are water managers taking climate change sufficiently into account? Is water management around us being adapted in time? Are flood defences high and strong enough? The current media coverage on climate change makes many doubt.

However, if everyone does their job and water managers stay alert, that doubt is unjustified. The centuries of experience in always anticipating the threat of water comes in handy. Today, the Netherlands is climate-proof. This will remain so if we (continue to) use the centuries of experience together with newly acquired knowledge and skills in an adequate way. The National Administrative Agreement on Water, which came into force in 2003, keeps everyone on their toes.

The explanation focuses on (regional) water management in your area. In order to determine whether the storage and discharge of water in rural and urban areas takes place in such a way as to avoid excessive nuisance, based on climate change, an assessment was carried out. This established which measures are needed. The implementation of these measures is now in full swing. The connection with flood safety at sea and in the rivers is highlighted.
