Description

Climate adaptation forces us to deal with (water) safety in and around the port of Rotterdam in a different and innovative way. The Port of Rotterdam Vision 2030 states : "In the coming decades, the State's Delta Programme will ensure that the Netherlands remains well protected against high water. This should not be at the expense of the accessibility of the port of Rotterdam for shipping". Are there clashing interests or compatible goals here? The various interests are put on edge.
From the water manager's point of view, emphasis will be placed on safety and preconditions, provided for under the Delta Programme. Provisions need to be made to be able to deal responsibly with future climate scenarios.
In addition, the port authority has a development task to further develop the port of Rotterdam into a sustainable international mainport full of activity.
From the industrial sector there are industrial business interests at play to remain internationally competitive from a location in mainport Rotterdam.
Finally, there are also political interests that need to be taken into account in realising integrally coordinated solutions. This includes the promotion of a socio-economically responsible safe living and working environment. The joint taking up of the sustainable development task by all interested parties in the port poses an enormous challenge
