Miner's Worst Nightmares
Description
CASPAR Lecture 2013:'Miner's Worst Nightmares'
The aftermath of the Chilean Mining Disaster
The purpose of the Caspar Lecture is to highlight the more personal experience of a speaker(s) on a topic relevant to our members, including some interaction with attendees.
For the 2013 Caspar Lecture, we want to focus on the tensions and fears involved in the mineral extraction profession, and how to deal with them. All this will be based on a case study: the incarcerated 33 Chilean miners, and on a number of authentic stories about issues such as:
- Mining hallway claustrophobia
- TU exam fears (up to 25 years after the fact)
- 'Blow-out' syndrome
- Minerals visions
- 'Heli-ditch fear'
Case study:
In 2010, the Chilean town of Copiapó became world news. Near this city, 33 miners became trapped in the San José mine on 5 August 2010. for 69 days they stayed at a depth of almost seven hundred metres. In front of millions of TV viewers, on 12 and 13 October 2010, they were freed one by one.
'Los 33' were welcomed as heroes and received invitations to visit Disney World in America and football matches of Real Madrid and Manchester United, among others. Some time after the disaster, some miners are doing a lot better than others. The media and the government played an important role in this. This will be shown in the book by journalist and writer Hugo Verkley: 'Estamos bien en el refugio Los 33 - The aftermath of the Chilean mining disaster', in which those involved look back on the mining disaster and talk about their often radically changed lives
