Report lecture 'algeBRA'

Following the general members' meeting, we were initiated into the world of technology behind the bra by Annemiek Holkamp. Although she has been out of the ready-to-wear clothing business for some time (she currently works as a personnel adviser for BAM), she was still well informed about this former field.
The history of the bra, but also functionality changes and fashion trends were illustrated.

We also looked at the entire process, from the first idea for a new model to the moment the product is available in the shops. This entire process takes no less than 16 months!

And then, of course, the sizing of the bra, something we ourselves deal with regularly. It turned out that sizing can vary from country to country but also that cup size is a relative size!
The cup size is always considered in relation to the circumference under the breast. This means that the volume of the cup is not the same for every circumference. If a bra stretches too much and one tries on a larger circumference, the same cup size will no longer fit properly. So when 90C is too small, try a 95B! Still, useful to know! After this explanation, we were allowed to enlarge the pattern from an 80B to a 90D ourselves. This proved no easy task even for us technical women.

Annemiek discussed another topic directly from current affairs: design protection based on the case of Marlies Dekkers versus Sapph, which was recently decided in Marlies' favour.

Finally, Annemiek used a quiz to take us through all kinds of interesting facts from the body fashion industry. It turned out that we (Dutch women) are no big spenders when it comes to bras......

Thus this General Members' Meeting (ALV) was enriched with an interactive and instructive meeting. Thanks to Annemiek Holkamp.
