WEBINAR: KIVI Nuclear Engineering/NNS annual meeting with mini-symposium on Nuclear Fusion on 28 January 2022

Due to current corona measures, it is not possible to hold a physical meeting on 28 January. The planned annual meeting with mini-symposium will therefore be converted into a webinar.

The meeting is open to members of KIVI Nuclear Engineering, patrons of NNS and patrons of Kernvisie. During the meeting, only members of KIVI Kerntechniek have voting rights.

The programme is as follows:

13:30 general meeting of KIVI Kerntechniek members, with resignation and re-election of board members Ewoud Verhoef, Hubert Boxman and Ginevra Delfini.

14:00 Mini-symposium with one speaker Michiel Korthals-Altes, Project Manager at ITER;

ITER: On complex project management; "an engineer among physicists"

ITER is one of the most ambitious and innovative projects in the field of energy. It is about proving the feasibility on a large scale of controlled nuclear fusion, using the largest Tokamak in the world. A unique organisation of 35 countries clustered in 7 Domestic Agencies (US, Russia, Japan, China, Korea India, EU) has been set up for this purpose. All participating countries contribute in cash and "in kind", i.e. components and systems.

Construction began 2010, with major reactor components arriving piece by piece from around the world. The first 150-million-degree plasma is planned for after 2025. The project is under pressure due to growing costs and expectations for a rapid carbon-free future. The challenges are immense: scientific, technical, industrial, organisational and political ...

What can project management bring to the project, and what can project experts learn here?
