Cryptomuseum

Cryptomuseum: Who we are and what keeps us busy in everyday life?

The progressive development of encryption has characteristically shaped history at certain times.
Paul Reuver and Marc Simons, administrators of the Cryptomuseum, will give demonstrations with the old electro-mechanical crypto devices and lectures on notable events with encryption in the past,
These were decisive for the course of history, after which the veil will also be lifted on the current state of developments in the Crypto field.

Demonstrations:

Demonstrations of old (electro)mechanical crypto-machines and how they were used in practice.
We show the demonstrations (also for on-line) with video-camera and explain, that cracking these machines is by no means obvious, nor trivial. And that is still true to this day.
Look for the many devices in detail on the site of the

History of cryptographic devices-development in the Netherlands 1945~1965:

A lecture will be given by Maarten Oberman on telex message security after World War II, as the government was working on it.
This history of the cryptographic devices developed and used at the time, will be discussed.
Organisations directly involved at the time: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Royal Navy, PTT, Philips-USFA .
In addition, the necessary anecdotes and side-steps will be made, which make the story very interesting, such as:

  • Why was the subject hardly known within PTT,

  • Why did the DG of PTT want to stop after 10 very successful years

  • How did the crypto industry originate in the Netherlands, as well as the reasons why it is no longer there today.

Operation Rubicon

The secret takeover of Crypto-AG (Hagelin) by the CIA and the BND is outlined by Paul Reuvers and Marc Simons of the Crypto Museum. In this talk, Paul Reuvers and Marc Simons will explain how the CIA and the BND took one of the most successful actions:

  • The takeover of Crypto-AG (Hagelin) in Zug, Switzerland. The historical connections will be explained, as well as the success of this move, but also the dangers of this takeover.
  • The connection will also be explained how the world looks today and to what extent this takeover has had an impact on it.
  • We note: Reality and hard evidence 100%, conspiracy theory content 0%.

Abstract:

Lecture History of cryptographic device development in the Netherlands 1945~1965:
A lecture by Maarten Oberman with much from his book along with many anecdotes and side-steps, which make the story very interesting. Maarten will particularly explain the role of PTT in this period.

Speaker's bio:

Studieverzameling EWI wordt doorgelicht

Maarten Oberman spent a number of years working for organisations in the field of cryptography at defence level, as well as at KPN securing connections for telephone and networks.
In his later years, he did a lot of consultancy work and is now working on post-World War II Dutch cryptohistory. In his later years, he has done a lot of consultancy work on voice and mobile communication networks. In recent years, he is mapping the post-World War II Dutch crypto history.

Fialka - die Chiffriermaschine, die aus der Kälte kam - Sternenjäger

Paul Reuvers is director/owner of X-Ample Technology BV
He is involved in firmware and software development in daily life. Paul is known for RISC-OS, an operating system dating back to the BBC computer era. Currently, RISC-OS is still being drily developed on the latest ARM cores. Firmware development is done in flat ANSI-C, respecting code space and making the most of minimal hardware. In his spare time, he is involved in the Crypto Museum.

Speaker's bio:

Marc Simons is director/owner of YiG Engineering BV
He is active in electronics hardware development on a project-by-project basis. Besides this development, YiG also provides production supervision, procurement and testing of electronics. Specialisms include high dynamic analogue electronics, high-frequency engineering and high-speed printed circuit design. In his spare time, he organises the Crypto Museum together with Paul. https://www.cryptologichistory.org/speakers/marc-simons
