Satellite communications, global
The evening was attended by around 30 KIVI and TSOC members, with speakers discussing the history of and new market developments in satellite communications.
The first speaker Edwin Cras (Managing Director at Castor Networks), after a brief introduction of his company, went into the history of satellite communications in the Netherlands. After explaining VSAT, the different frequency bands and how this technology is used by the different satellite providers, Edwin gave an insight into applications of satellite communication in remote areas in Africa and a look at the latest developments for the maritime sector (luxury yacht building segment).
The second speaker, Gert-Jan Panken (Vice President Applications at Inmarsat), addressed the developments of the digital economy and the exponential demand for mobile data. Gert-Jan then gave insights into new applications and developments that Inmarsat is currently working on to continue serving its customers in the future, looking at the transport, agriculture and mining sectors.
The evening ended with a short discussion, followed by the usual networking over drinks.
Description
The Telecommunications Department invites you to the lecture evening with the following theme:
"Satellite communications, global".
The world of satellite communications keeps on moving, however, the market is consolidated, customer demand is changing.
How special it remains that in the most inhospitable parts, on land or on water, you can have contact with the home front, send images and locate machines.
Keeping up with changing market demand requires on-the-edge innovation.
You can see this at Inmarsat, which has now developed an entire portfolio for "In Flight connectivity".
In the aircraft, satellite, Wi-Fi, and telecoms come together.
But their specific solution for communications within military organisations is also vastly expanded.
Castor Networks was once the satellite broadcasting subsidiary of KPN, now a privately financed Dutch company with eight offices worldwide.
They own two so-called teleports with associated fibre-optic networks with which they serve many international customers.
Both companies are important links "to connect the unconnected" around the world.
Especially the companies, which can actually deploy the innovation in those faraway places, can survive.
Both companies also share something in common, the ancient Burum which was on the world map as station 12.
This evening, they will grippingly discuss how they can still distinguish themselves and how they see the future of this special world.
