Spyker lecture/award ceremony Spyker Prize 2010
Spyker lecture lecture 'SKF innovations in automotive applications' and visit to CVT 2010 congress in MECC
The Vehicle Engineering Department of KIVI NIRIA annually awards the Spyker Prize for the best graduation papers in the field of vehicle engineering in the Netherlands. The prize is named after the illustrious Dutch car brand from the first quarter of the last century, which has found a spectacular successor in the new Spyker. The Spyker Prize has an HBO and a WO version.
Spyker lecture by Bernie van Leeuwen, SKF: 'SKF innovations in automotive applications'
Bernie van Leeuwen, Innovation Strategy Developer of SKF Automotive Devision, gave this year's Spyker Lecture entitled 'SKF innovations in automotive applications'. Here he addressed the main trends in automotive development such as: reduction of CO2, increased safety, etc. Here, car manufacturers largely depend on suppliers to make the new goals possible with new technologies. CO2 reduction involves downsizing, electricfication, weight reduction, etc. SKF provides various solutions for this, such as replacing the slide bearings around the crankshaft with ball bearings to reduce friction

Spyker Prize
As in past years, after the lecture the Spyker Prize was awarded for the best graduation reports in HBO and WO education. The graduation supervisors had submitted a total of 4 HBO and 8 WO theses to our Jury headed by Peter van der Koogh. The jury nominated two theses for HBO; 1 from HAN and 1 from HRO, and four for WO, two from TU Delft and 1 from both UT and TU/e. All nominees gave a 10-minute presentation after which there was 2 minutes for questions. This way, all listeners get an insight into the purpose of the research and the results and conclusions.
The following people were nominated:
|
Remon Schreuder |
Production process optimisation Volvo FE LEC | HRO |
|
Aart Jan van der Hoeven |
Research on Electromagnetic Shock Absorbers | HAN |
| Jeroen van den Hurk | Research on Electromagnetic Shock Absorbers | HAN |
| Mauro Della Penna | Development of a Haptic Interface for Evasive Manoeuvres | TU Delft |
| Kakin Tsoi | Development of a Haptic Feedback Transition Algorithm for Lane Changes | TU Delft |
| Niels Leermakers | Experimental study on the impact of operating conditions and fuel comsumption on PCCI combustion | TU/e |
| Jan-Harmen-Wiebenga | Improve of Predictability of Crashworthiness Simulations with respect to Head-Impact onto the Volkswagen Polo Dashboard | UT |
By clicking on the name of the thesis, you can view the presentation. Only Jan-Harmen-Wiebenga's may not be posted online.
HBO Spyker Prize
Among the HBO nominees, ing. Remon Schreuder with his report 'Production process optimisation Volvo FE-LEC' performed ESTEPE. The report describes the entire quality process Mr Schreuder implemented at ESTEPE during his graduation. At ESTEPE, Volvo trucks are adapted to a low entry level which is especially important for refuse trucks.
The first prize at HBO, Euro 500,- was sponsored by High Tech Automotive Campus.
First prize at HBO: ing. Remon Schreuder
WO Spyker Prize
At WO, first prize went to ir. Kakin Tsoi with his report 'Development of a Haptic Feedback Transition Algorithm for Lane Changes' conducted at TU Delft in collaboration with Nissan. His assignment was to develop a model for a 'driver support system' based on forces in steering wheel that supports both lane tracking and lane change with a smooth transition in between. This kind of system lets the driver make the decision but actively supports it by adjusting the forces in the steering wheel.
The first prize at WO, Euro 500,- was sponsored by High Tech Automotive Systems.
First prize at WO: ir Kakin Tsoi with Han van den Bremer, HTAC (right) and Peter van der Koogh.
The other students also gave interesting presentations on their graduation work so we can look back on a very successful Spyker award ceremony. All students went home with a free membership of KIVI NIRIA.
CVT 2010 conference
This time, the award ceremony took place at the MECC in Maastricht, where the CVT 2010 congress was opened that evening.

Description
Spyker Lecture
The Spyker Lecture 2010 will be delivered by Bernie van Leeuwen, working at SKF in Nieuwegein as Innovation Strategy Developer. The lecture "SKF innovations in automotive applications" will describe general automotive trends. This will include some examples of what SKF is researching, such as making steering knuckles lighter, reducing friction in transmissions and turbochargers, among others, and the integration of sensors in micro-hybrid systems, for example. In addition, the software tools used in the research and development process will be discussed.
Spykerprijs 2010
Once again this year, KIvI NIRIA's Vehicle Engineering Department is organising the Spyker Prize. The prize, €500 each, is awarded annually to the best graduation reports by WO and HBO students on the subject of vehicle engineering. The prize is named after the illustrious Dutch car brand from the beginning of the last century, which has found a fine successor in the modern Spyker. For both WO and HBO, 3 nominees will explain their research through a short presentation. The nominees were chosen from a selection of 8 WO and 4 HBO theses that were nominated by the graduation lecturers of HAN, Hogeschool Rotterdam, TU Eindhoven, TU Twente and TU Delft.
A wonderful opportunity to experience the research work of the educational institutions in cooperation with the business community and to keep abreast of the latest developments.
The award ceremony is sponsored by High Tech Automotive Systems and the High Tech Automotive Campus.
Visit to CVT2010 congress exhibition
This year, the award ceremony will take place especially at the MECC in Maastricht on the opening night of the international CVT2010 congress. During the congress, some 40 lectures will be given on Thursday and Friday on various CVT drives including Hybrid applications. Several international companies (Bosch-VDT, Jatco, NFK, LuK, DTI etc) and institutes (TU/e) will show what is possible in the field of CVT drives at associated exhibitions. Count on interesting show of cars, demos, hardware, videos, posters etc.
