Masterclass information

Finding the right features for AI

What does AI mean for you as an engineer? What can you do with it in your specialism? How can you apply it to perform your work in a better and more efficient way? These questions will be answered during an interactive workshop that will be part of this Masterclass. By going into the background of AI, it will become clear that the answers to practical questions will become much more logical, sharp and useful.

Finding the right features for AI: Techniques, concepts and guidelines - the book

Jeroen's book Finding the right features for AI: Techniques, concepts and guidelines was published in 2024. Training AI is a precise process. Many different variables can be used, whose values have effects on the outcome. But, the more variables used, the more computing power is required, and thus the more energy is consumed. So, to train AI in a smarter, faster and more efficient way, it is important to reduce the number of variables and thus understand which variables are relevant for a given application. This not only reduces the computing power required but can also result in better outcomes. Jeroen's book acts as a practical instruction manual on how to best train and deploy AI as an engineer, and delves into exactly what is involved.

Biography

Jeroen van Bijsterveld studied psychology and communication science, and cognitive science at Radboud University in Nijmegen. He also studied AI long before its breakthrough and wrote, among other things, a book on the practical translation of problems to AI. Jeroen belongs to the first wave of AI-ers; he lived through the pioneering phase, the AI winter, and, of course, the current AI boom. He taught AI and its applications, in both Groningen and Germany. He also worked as a software designer and product analyst.
