Bernard van Hemert, Senior Project Manager Offshore Windfarms
Offshore wind; just some of the technical challenges...
Since he became active in offshore wind farms, Bernard van Hemert has got to know about four wind farms inside and out. Based on his experiences, he provides insight into how big offshore wind turbines and their foundations are today, and what we can expect in the future. What technical challenges do designers and project developers face? Where and how do you make a foundation that weighs up to 900 tonnes? With what kind of cranes and ships do you transport such a pile? How do you drive it into the seabed without the pile or the hammer collapsing under the enormous forces? And how do you then attach the turbine to this foundation? And what about the electricity cables connecting the wind turbines to each other and to the transformer station? Using slides, Bernard will discuss these and many other challenges posed by offshore wind farms. Questions and request numbers are welcome!
Jos Beurskens, Ex headed the Renewable Energy and Wind Energy Units ECN
After a brief presentation on the physical and technical aspects of wind energy conversion (at turbine and wind farm level) and integration into our electricity system, the current state of affairs will be discussed. How much capacity is now installed? What is the market potential? What is the contribution to our electricity consumption? As the most attractive wind sites have gradually been used or, due to lack of public acceptance, cannot be used, areas with more extreme climatic conditions for wind exploitation come into the picture. This concerns in particular areas where the risk of ice formation is high and areas, where erosive conditions prevail in combination with high temperatures (deserts). During the lecture, as an example, cold climate applications will be discussed in more detail.
Frits Ogg, self-employed and working as an author, lecturer and consultant in the field of energy and innovation
Small and medium-sized wind turbines:
Small and medium-sized wind turbines have their own specific applications worldwide. Just as there are differences between cars and bicycles - both means of transport - there are also differences between small, medium and large wind turbines. Frits Ogg will discuss the differences and specific applications of small and medium-sized wind turbines, such as rural areas, islands, telecoms and telemetry. He will also discuss specific problems of incorporating wind energy into island grids, weak grids and wind turbines in picogrids
