Season opener; Doorwerth Castle
Description
This activity is intended exclusively for members of the Gelderland region, their partners and (grand)children.
History
The oldest part, built by the knight Berend van Dorenweerd in the 13th century, consists of a rectangular residential tower measuring about 10 by 15 metres. This residential tower was originally surrounded by a moat and can still be recognised as the current east wing. The south wing was built against the small castle during the 14th century and further extensions followed later. The massive residential tower on the north wing, with its cantilevered turrets at the corner points, was built during the 15th century. However, one does not know exactly when. It is assumed that Reinald van Homoet was responsible for this building project, as accounts exist from the years 1435-1436. These speak of extensive building projects. However, it is certain that Van Homoet is responsible for numerous other extensions, such as enlarging the south wing and moving the main entrance. The forecourt also dates in construction from the 15th century. The last major expansion took place in the mid-16th century, with the enlargement of the south wing and the construction of the massive south-west tower (which was demolished in the 18th century, to be rebuilt in the 19th century.
