Film and lecture on LHC
Description
Film and lecture on LHC (and Higgs particle, CERN Geneva) in Groningen.
On the border between France and Switzerland near Geneva at a depth of 100 metres lies the largest machine ever made by human hands. A purely circular racetrack with a length of 26.659 km to be precise. This race track achieves the highest speeds on earth. The instrument is surrounded by the most advanced detectors in the world.
The computer hardware and software is the best in the world. Inside the machine we find the emptiest space within the solar system, and the hottest ánd coldest place within the universe.
We are talking about the LHC, the Large Hadron Collider, an accelerator in which particles are accelerated to almost the speed of light before colliding with each other. With this scientific instrument, physicists hope to find answers to some pressing questions such as:
- What gives matter its mass and is the standard model for elementary particles correct?
- Where has all the antimatter gone?
- Do we now know all the elementary particles or are there more?
- What is dark matter made of?
About the construction of this machine and the research people want to do with it, a documentary has been made "Higgs". Named after the one who, at least theoretically, proposed an answer to the first question. Also the Higgs boson that when found confirms his rightness bears his name.
KIVI NIRIA will screen this documentary on Wednesday evening 22 September 2010 at the Paleis in Groningen. Professor E.A. Bergshoeff, professor at the RuG and Academy Professor, will be present after the film to explain the research and construction of the LHC.
It is worth mentioning that last year Het Paleis was voted the most beautiful building in Groningen. So you get an evening where you get to hear about the most beautiful machine in the world in Groningen's most beautiful building. There is room for about 30 people, so sign up quickly and full is full!
