New Theatre & Centre Arts, Sneek
Description
On Westersingel, the contours of the 23-metre-high stage tower are now clearly visible. Work is in full swing on the outside, and construction is now also in full swing inside. The new theatre will have a 620-seat auditorium, a stage tower with extensive technical facilities and a spacious foyer.
Architectural firm Alberts and Van Huut have produced a fantastic design for this. Inspired by the surroundings, the firm conceived a building with organic shapes derived from nature. The roof of the auditorium will be decorated with lots of greenery and small trees, making it a fairy-like building!
On the other side of the water on the Kerkgracht, the construction of the new Centre for the Arts and Ritmyk enters its final building phase. A glass atrium connects the classrooms the Noorderkerk and Het Bolwerk. The Noorderkerk (now Theatre Sneek) will host classes, but will also continue to host small theatre performances.
The opening of the entire Cultural Quarter Sneek will take place in October 2012.
Theater Sneek is the only Dutch theatre on the route of the Elfstedentocht. Now temporarily housed in the restored Noorderkerk on the Kerkgracht, but soon across the street on the Westersingel, where a brand new middle theatre is now steadily rising. During the theatre season, Theatre Sneek already receives an average of 20,000 visitors annually.
The basis for the new building is the former TNT building in Sneek. The interior of the building will be completely hollowed out and provided with a new interior with a theatre auditorium, dressing rooms, foyers, toilets and a courtyard garden. Alberts en Van Huut will replace the current austere façade with a transparent façade featuring a whimsical interplay of lines and a colourful entrance that matches the surroundings. In the architects' vision, a park will be built on the roof of the former post office, connecting to the green lung that meanders through the surrounding neighbourhood.
A 23-metre stage tower will be built behind the roof park. In terms of shape, too, the tower blends into the whole. It echoes the whimsical contours as well as the transparency of the façade. This, combined with the use of natural materials such as glass, brick and bamboo as cladding, will ultimately ensure that the building becomes a logical, almost natural unit.
Apart from the striking external features, sustainability is also a feature of organic architecture. The design is such that daylight can be used in the auditorium as well as in the stage tower and the adjacent workshop. Furthermore, the temperature in the building is easily maintained by the insulating effect of the roof vegetation.
