Study by Elsevier and TU/e translates 4th generation university concept into measurable indicators to enable comparison

Elsevier, a leading player in research information and analysis, and TU/e today announce the results of their joint exploration of the emerging concept of '4th generation universities'. These are global universities deeply intertwined with their local innovation ecosystem, aimed at addressing global societal challenges and driving regional economic growth.

The detailed report on TU/e's transformative role as a 4th generation university is available here:'Towards the 4th generation university: The transformative role of TU/e in delivering innovation and impact in the Eindhoven region'.

Expectations about how universities create value for society are changing, in response to changing societal needs and political priorities. In recent decades, the emphasis, alongside education and research, has been on valorisation. However, global developments are forcing universities to adapt their strategies and take on a more intensive role, especially in developing solutions to societal challenges in close collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders in an open innovation ecosystem. A new paradigm is thus emerging for universities: the 4th generation university.

In this context, Elsevier and TU/e have thoroughly investigated how the concept of the 4th generation university can be translated into measurable indicators. The aim was to further develop the concept, allow universities to benchmark themselves against similar institutions and help with strategic development.

The report analyses TU/e's impact on the local community, especially in the Brainport region where multinationals such as ASML, NXP and Philips collaborate with knowledge organisations and thousands of companies in the innovation ecosystem to jointly create leading-edge solutions. It examines how TU/e is involved in research initiatives in collaboration with these stakeholders. It also explores collaborations with emerging start-ups and scale-ups such as Smart Photonics.

Judy Verses, Academic & Government President at Elsevier: "In today's era of rapid change, the role of universities has never been more crucial. Universities like TU/e are breaking traditional boundaries with initiatives that bridge the gap between academics, industry and government. Together with TU/e, we will explore how 4th generation universities can foster collaboration, drive innovation and bring about positive social change."

Robert-Jan Smits, chairman of the TU/e Executive Board: "We are very excited about the collaboration with Elsevier to present TU/e as an example of 4th generation university, and to learn from other universities' development in their regional innovation ecosystems. Based on Elsevier's world-leading experience in translating measurement data into meaningful insights, this lays a solid foundation for exploring the 4th generation university."

The report draws on Elsevier's data and analysis, including research on geographical collaboration partners and recently developed key technology classifications, which were used in drafting the National Technology Strategy.

Other interested universities should contactMax Dumoulinof Elsevier to join in sharing best practices and contribute to the understanding of the 4th generation university.
