Pilot Plant
Description
On 7 June 2012, we were guests at the Bio Base Europe Training Centre in Terneuzen. During that meeting, we indicated that we would also like to visit the Pilot Plant between Zelzate and Ghent. Through contacts with a process engineer from this Pilot Plant, we were able to arrange a visit, only it has to be in the morning.
Bio Base Europe is the first open innovation and training centre for the bio-based economy in Europe. Flanders and the Netherlands have joined forces to build a state-of-the art research and training centre to accelerate the economic growth, innovation capacity and sustainable development of our society.
In addition to the Training Centre in Terneuzen, a Pilot Plant has been realised in the port area of Ghent in the old Fire Station between Zelzate and Ghent. This Pilot Plant is the actual location where process-related R&D is done to achieve new developments in the Bio Base Economy.
This Pilot Plant should close the gap between scientific feasibility and industrial application of new biotechnological processes. Thanks to the Pilot Plant, the actual operating costs and specific strengths and weaknesses of new biotechnological processes can be estimated before expensive large-scale investments are made. The Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is a "one-stop shop" where the entire value chain can be carried out in a single installation, starting from the green biomass feedstock to the bio-finished product. It focuses on second-generation technologies that process agricultural waste streams and non-food crops into biofuels, bioplastics and other bioproducts.
The Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is an example of what we call "open innovation". It is accessible to companies and research institutes from all over the world. The Pilot Plant is located in the Port of Ghent in Belgium and is accessible to companies and research institutions from all over the world.
We now have the opportunity to visit the Pilot Plant between Zelzate and Ghent, which is very worthwhile.
