Fellow Chartered Engineer: Exclusive recognition of exceptional craftsmanship
The Fellow Chartered Engineer (FCE) is the highest and most prestigious professional award that the Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI) can confer on an engineer. That this is an exceptional title is evident from the fact that it has been awarded only three times in the Netherlands to date. This title testifies not only to outstanding professional competence, but also to a lasting impact on the engineering profession and a very valuable contribution to society.
A Fellow Chartered Engineer is an engineer distinguished by:
- Leadership within the profession or in society
- Demonstrable contributions to innovation, sustainability or societal development
- An active role in the development of the engineering profession
- Inspiring role model behaviour for fellow engineers and future generations

Fellow Chartered Engineers
Three exceptional engineers have so far been appointed Fellow Chartered Engineer by the Royal Institute of Engineers.
Dr.Ir. CEng Jan van der Tempel - 2025
On 5 September 2025, Jan van der Tempel was appointed Fellow Chartered Engineer by the Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI). The title Fellow Chartered Engineer is the highest and most prestigious professional distinction that can be conferred on an engineer. To date, this title has only been awarded three times in the Netherlands, adding to an illustrious list.
Prof Aad van der Horst - 2021
The Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI) has appointed Aad van der Horst, consultant to BAM Infraconsult, as a Fellow Chartered Engineer on 30 June 2021.
Prof.ir. Aad van der Horst made significant contributions to the charter structure in the Netherlands in addition to his professional achievements.
This title was awarded for the third time in the Netherlands.
Ir. Edward Heerema - 2016
The Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI) has installed Edward Heerema, CEO of Allseas, as a Fellow Chartered Engineer.
Ir. Edward Heerema was the first person in the Netherlands to receive this prestigious title in 2016. He received the award for his pioneering, innovative and significant contributions to the global offshore and maritime industry.

CEng Jon Prichard
Jon Prichard is a prominent figure in the world of technical professionalism. His career spans from military to international professional organisation leader. He is recognised for raising standards, promoting international cooperation and public awareness of the engineering profession.
His contribution to both the UK engineering community and initiatives such as the KIVI-Chartered process in 2014/2015 highlights his impact to this day.
Chartership status
The underlying aim of the Chartership is to continuously promote the professional development of engineers, to stimulate innovation, to safeguard knowledge in the field and to ensure social dialogue and responsible action by the engineer. The Chartership contributes to the development of engineering science and distinguishes engineers who make a contribution. The titles that can be awarded are Chartered Engineer (MSc level) and Incorporated Engineer (BSc level). These titles are internationally recognised qualifications for engineers with appropriate professional experience.
It provides a structure for knowledge exchange and continuous professional development across multiple engineering fields and disciplines. Key elements are reflective learning, peer review and a strong focus on continuous professional development of engineers' knowledge, experience and commitment. Chartership is an internationally recognised qualification for engineers as Chartered Engineer (MSc level) or Incorporated Engineer (BSc level).
When do you qualify?
You are eligible for the title Fellow Chartered Engineer if you:
- As a Chartered Engineer (CEng) registered with KIVI
- You have at least 10 years of relevant work experience in a managerial or influential position
- You have made a long-term commitment to the development of the engineering profession or society
- Be nominated by peers or a committee within KIVI
- The nomination is made after careful selection by an independent committee. It is not a step you apply for, but a recognition you deserve.
