KIVI Asset management & Maintenance anniversary meeting - Summary

What have been the most important developments on maintenance and asset management in the past 10 years? And what challenges and developments do we face in the next 10 years?

With that question, KIVI branch 'Asset Management & Maintenance' set out to investigate during the celebration of its 10th anniversary on 12 May this year at the KIVI building in The Hague. The anniversary afternoon consisted of 3 lectures and a panel discussion, together with the audience present.

With Martin Madern and Maarten Visser, we looked at a digital twin at the Aanpak Wegtunnels Amsterdam programme and the new training opportunities for operators that this offers. Eric van der Wel took us through Utrecht University's building management and the diversity of assets it contains. Timo de Vos concluded the afternoon with APM Terminals MVII's journey from sand flat to operation and the various transitions that have been and will be coming up on the organisation.

Some of the afternoon's conclusions:

  • maintenance is becoming more specialised, exploit knowledge in the market;
  • data is everywhere, use it in a meaningful way;
  • change with small steps is more effective than jolting;
  • investing in starting employees is important to make the profession more attractive;
  • be open to the knowledge and competences of the current generation to take the profession to state-of-the-art by incorporating current techniques and methodologies.

We would like to thank all speakers and participants for their contribution and presence.

Explanation of topics and speakers

The Aanpak Wegtunnels Amsterdam programme has developed a digital tunnel twin for the Piet Hein tunnel. During the design phase of the Piet Hein tunnel renovation, various procedures and protocols could already be gone through virtually. The simulation provided a quicker insight into the operation of the tunnel installations, enabling a quick mutual understanding with the stakeholders and substantive coordination. The tunnel twin is now also being used to train operating personnel. Maarten Visser explains this from his role as developer and consultant from the market and Martin Madern on behalf of the tunnel management organisation from the municipality.

Dutch universities have owned their real estate since 1 January 1995. Since that time, property management and thus the organisation of management and maintenance at universities has evolved. Erik van der Wel, head of the Technical Management and Policy department, talks about the development of Utrecht University's maintenance organisation over the past ten years and the factors that will influence the organisation of management and maintenance in the coming years. These include not only developments within the university itself, but also social developments that affect the university maintenance organisation from the outside.

The development of APM Terminals' new, highly automated container terminal at Maasvlakte 2 has had a very dynamic character and rapid growth in recent years: The land was handed over in April 2011. Infrastructure construction started in May 2012. A year later, the first Equipment arrived on site. In November 2014, the first part of the terminal was commissioned and the full "go live" took place in 2015. Timo de Vos is manager of Asset Maintenance at APM Terminals at Maasvlakte 2. He talks about the journey the Asset Maintenance department has been on since 2013; from setting up and improving a complex asset management environment in one of the most advanced container terminals ever built, to preparing the department for the next phase in the life cycle in a rapidly changing world."
