SKF Research Centre
On Wednesday 14 May, a group of 24 KIVI members and guests were warmly welcomed to the impressive SKF Engineering & Research Centre. The theme for the meeting was to learn together more about the origins, implementation and testing of ISO55000.
Prior to the presentations, the group was given a tour of the Engineering & Research Centre. This tour was provided by Hans Sloof, Manager Technical Visits, and could rightly be called special. The group was taken to the heart of SKF where fundamental and applied research was carried out on a whole range of areas. The tour started with a visit to the workshop where all the different tools were gathered designed by SKF to perform work on SKF Bearings, for example.
After the workshop, the group visited the various microscopy departments where Element Analysis and Electron Microscopy, among others, were applied to investigate the behaviour of SKF parts.
A special room was the one where X-Ray defraction took place, where the lifespan of parts was determined under radioactive conditions. Knowledge of this in turn leads to the composition of a product with, among other things, an ideal alloy composition.
The test hall was the next stop on the route. In this hall, dynamic and static tests were performed to determine the service life, among other things. This included set-ups of train wheels and windmill bearings. The tests took place under dynamic conditions controlled by hydraulic cylinders.
The tour ended and the participants headed for the speakers.
The first speaker was Boris Neefjes from Evides. As Maintenance Manager, he has been responsible for implementing PAS55 and is now preparing for ISO55000 certification. Evides produces and processes industrial water and operates mainly in Zeeland.
Evides' approach to implementing the ISO55000 was to convert the terms Asset, Asset Management and Asset Management System into concrete things and with this answer the questions:
- What should you do?
- When should you do it?
- How should you do it?
- And who should do it?
Already during the presentation, discussions arose about experiences and different ways of working.
The next presentation was by Hanno Spoelstra, Manager Asset Management at SKF and co-author of the ISO55000.
Hanno gave an overview of the ISO55000 in which the balance between costs, opportunities and risks formed the basis for the ISO55000. En passant, the discussion arose as to why we do not yet have a single risk matrix in the Netherlands. A discussion for which we could perhaps organise a subsequent Event. Finally, Hanno concluded with the statement about KPIs "measuring is knowing, but interpreting is learning". With this, he could count on the agreement of the audience.
The last speaker was Alex Roovers of Lloyds Registers. Alex works as a consultant within Loyds where he guides clients towards the implementation of ISO55000 and where he audits clients on ISO55000.
For an auditor who comes to perform tests, it is especially important to have consistency between the various processes, Alex argued. Here, Alex gave some examples using the different steps in the ISO5500. These were:
- The context of the organisation, who are the stakeholders and what analysis have you applied to identify them?
- The Strategic Asset Management Plan, how is the future picture translated into the Core Business of the organisation?
- The Integral Risk Management, which risks have been identified and how are they being dealt with?
After the speakers, there was room for discussion, especially debunking the thesis that certification is a "circus", but a way supports good practice.
Afterwards, the discussion continued in SKF's Explorer bar. The tour, the speakers, the host venue and the discussion made this a successful event!
Description
Impact of the new ISO55000 for Your Organisation?
Company visit SKF Research centre Niewegein.
Implementation of a standard should bring a benefit to a company or society. Where those benefits are and how to achieve them will be explained by a number of speakers on Wednesday 14 May. We will combine this introduction with a visit to the SKF Research Centre where you can learn about the latest insights into bearing technology.
The KIVI Maintenance Department has organised a lecture on 14 May with the following speakers:
- Boris Neefjes, Maintenance Manager at Evides. Mr Neefjes implemented PAS55 and speaks from his own experience about the road to certification and the result.
- Hanno Spoelstra, Manager Asset Management Services at SKF, also a member of the NEN standards committee. Mr Spoelstra will give some background on the new standard and explain from his own experience where he sees advantages, especially in the field of legislation and regulations.
- Finally, Alex Roovers of Lloyd's will talk about certification and what it involves.
- Reception SKF European Research Center in Nieuwegein
- Tour of SKF Research Center
- Presentations by Messrs Neefjes, Spoelstra and Roovers of Lloyd's (TBN)
- Questions and discussion
- Closing with drinks
