Description

Every year, the board of the Department of Engineering Physics of KIVI NIRIA holds a General Assembly (ALV). Also this year. You are very welcome to attend the general assembly on Thursday 21 March 2013 from 5 pm to 6 pm.
During this general assembly, the board will give an overview of the activities undertaken in 2012 and you will get an insight into the financial situation.

You can praise the board for the things that went right in your eyes and call them to account for the things that were wrong in your eyes.
You can always express your ideas about the department, but during an ALV you can do so in direct contact with the board and the other members present.

After the ALV, there will be an opportunity to have something to eat and then, at 7pm, the also annual mini-symposium will begin.

The mini-symposium's topic is 'Technical Physics in Research and Restoration of Fine Art'.

Restoring paintings, sculptures and other art objects, both old and new, requires not only a particularly skilful hand but also an extensive knowledge of the materials used by the artist.
Those materials were usually manufactured by the artist himself or under his supervision. Pigments were composed of various ingredients, panels were treated beforehand before being used, types of stone and marble were chosen with care. And these are just a few examples.
An object was also sometimes damaged for various reasons, and over the centuries people have always tried to repair the damage. The attempts were always well-intentioned but not always successful.
Nowadays, before starting any restoration work, the object to be restored is meticulously examined. This involves the use of a variety of advanced physical and chemical techniques.
But not only research for the purpose of restoration is important, the purely scientific results of the research also contribute to our knowledge of the artists' world.

This mini-symposium will try to give you more insight into the way physics is applied in the art world.
Dr Robert van Langh of the Rijksmuseum will start with a lecture on the research on bronze sculptures using neutron beams. Prof Jaap Boon of AMOLF will talk about the application of synchrotron radiation in the study of paintings paint and Prof Joris Dik, affiliated to the Laboratory for Materials Science at TU Delft and holder of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Chair "Materials in Art and Archaeology" will close. The title of his lecture is now known and is 'Under the skin of paintings'.

We do not do tying. It is of course nice if you come to the ALV, however, if you only want to visit the symposium, then of course you can. But the reverse is certainly also possible.
