Description

Interface is a forerunner in sustainability and aims to become the first company in the world with zero negative impact on the environment by 2020. Anno 2014, Interface is well on its way to achieving this goal. A large number of spectacular innovations have been implemented, drastically reducing its carbon footprint. To name a few: halving the amount of yarn per m2, carpet recycling, yarns based on biological raw materials, ultrasonic cutting technology, carpet laying without gluing and far-reaching reductions in truck transport. For more information see Interface's sustainability brochure (link below).

Geanne van Arkel, responsible for Sustainable Development at Interface tells us about Interface's sustainability ambitions, innovations and results. You will also have the opportunity to tour the factory. Two sustainability topics of great importance to Interface will then be explored in parallel workshops.

Workshop 1: 'FSSD'
Judy van der Lijke of The Sustainability Company tells us about the essence of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, which is the basis for Interface's successes. FSSD provides clear and universal criteria to define sustainability. It is a compass to work step-by-step towards a sustainable organisation. FSSD starts from a set of 4 logical sustainability principles and builds a sustainability strategy and action plan step by step on them, which of course in terms of content is unique for each company.

Workshop 2: 'Hallmarks sustainable business practices'
by Reinier de Nooij, Optimal Planet.
Interface attaches great importance to hard sustainability facts for making sustainability visible. To this end, organisations have a wide range of labels to choose from. Unfortunately, in recent years, there has been a proliferation of labels, which today often means less transparency, less distinctiveness and less incentive for improvement. In this workshop, we will show which labels really matter, and for which purposes they can be used. We will also discuss the content of the labels that can pass the critical test. In doing so, we will show which combination of labels best represents the content of the concept of sustainability
