Cybersecurity

The Cybersecurity Assessment Netherlands 2021 (CSBN 2021) was issued in June 2021 by the NCTV i.c.w. the NCSC. It reflected the current state of digital threats, the interests, which may be affected, the resilience and the risks.

With a "smart" approach, cyber security levels can be further increased and cyber attacks can be detected and stopped earlier and faster.

An example is the National Detection Network (NDN) one of the least known, and at the same time most important, defence mechanisms, the Netherlands has built.

This "Smart" development is necessary, because during the Webinar "Towards 6G" on 29 June 2021, it became clear, that the development of future smart networks, such as 6G, requires demanding solutions, which can only be achieved by applying key technologies from multiple domains and integrating them (such as high-performance computing, cybersecurity, ai/ml, iot).

The aim of this KIVI Webinar was to provide insight into the trends in cybersecurity and address day-to-day practices in cybersecurity.

Choosing and setting up security measures is usually taken with an internal view, such as:

- Which data and which systems does the organisation want to protect?

- How risk-averse are executives?

- How can cybersecurity best support the primary business process?

- Which vulnerabilities have the highest impact and should be addressed first?

All valid questions, but with a rapidly changing outside world, it is also necessary to look outwards. Which threat actors are targeting my organisation? What do they want to achieve and what is their modus operandi? How do I know if I am already a victim?

Using Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) offers a host of benefits. In this presentation, Paul Treffers and Matthijs van der Wel discussed what CTI is, the benefits of using it and how to achieve good CTI. Jeroen Gaiser showed how cybersecurity is approached at RWS. And Ab Bresser outlined how parties are supported in this process Jeroen. The presentations included concrete examples and stories from practice.

Cybersecurity matters within Rijks Waterstaat (RWS)
Jeroen Gaiser (RWS)

"Besides the well-known IT, there is also a lot of industrial automation (also known as OT) in the Netherlands. This OT can be found from pepper growers to our vital objects. In this presentation, Jeroen gives an insight into the threats against OT, what challenges there are to address cybersecurity in this world and in his presentation Jeroen gives insights into the approach of Rijkswaterstaat."

Ing. Jeroen Gaiser MSc CISSP
Coordinating Advisor Cybersecurity Rijkswaterstaat (RWS)

Jeroen has now been working in IT for over 25 years, focusing mainly on cybersecurity for the past 12 years. At RWS, he works in the Security Centre where he and his colleagues are committed to making and keeping all RWS automation resilient against digital threats. Besides security by design, Jeroen is one of the advisers to the CISO and liaison to the NCSC, among others.
