Lustrum

Creating a global village
The shining future of internet education

Under this motto, engineers and relations of the KIVI Circle Schiedam-Vlaardingen, part of the national engineering association KIVI, celebrated the circle's second lustrum on 12 April 2010 .

During the GOEDE DOELEN AVOND on Monday 12 April 2010 at Theater aan de Schie in Schiedam, dinner was enjoyed by just under 180 guests, accompanied by musical entertainment from Agnes Loonstra and Mystery Guest "Frank Sinatra". Afterwards, there was an auction where people could bid on artworks by artists from the Waterweg area (and beyond), workshops and organised excursions to - how could it be otherwise - ingenious projects and locations.

The final proceeds of total lustrum action amount to €30,462, of which €1,350 was raised by pupils of Scholengemeenschap Spieringshoek. To our surprise, the Ministry of Development Cooperation added another € 27,000.00 to this amount, as a grant from proceeds raised by a private initiative. This makes the total result of our anniversary celebration almost €58,000.

This means that two schools can be provided with a complete computer system: Lindi and Ilulu. The project in Lindi has already been realised and officially opened on 17 November 2010, in the presence of Ukengee board members. From the Schiedam-Vlaardingen circle, one of the board members will visit this school in July 2011.

The school in Lindi now has A-status: this means that the school now also has grades 5 and 6 (in addition to grades 1 to 4). As a result, successful completion of this school offers the possibility of university and higher education. An exception in the region around Lindi.
The school in Ilulu still needs to develop further, but Ukengee's project does provide an important impetus as work is now underway on new classrooms,a canteen and a lunchroom for girls.

Ukengee Foundation

This foundation aims to provide secondary schools in Tanzania with solar-powered computer systems. This will give these students the opportunity to be introduced to modern forms of education and communication via the internet. This allows students in the developing world to connect with the rest of the world and thus become part of the global village. In the appendix you will find detailed information about the Ukengee Foundation. See also www.ukengee.org.

Youth and Technology

Youth has the future. KIVI believes it is important to introduce the youth to engineering. As part of our anniversary, we formed a partnership with SG Spieringshoek. This comprehensive school for HAVO/VWO in Schiedam with around 1,300 students formed an important link in our Charity project. During its annual Lent Action, in which money is raised through various sports and game activities, the school linked up with our Charity. The proceeds from this day, on 19 March 2010, amounted to € 1,350.

The Charity

The celebration of the 2nd Lustrum of the KIVI NIRIA Circle had set itself a concrete goal:
Support the Ukengee Foundation in the purchase of a computer network and computers for secondary schools in South Tanzania. In this particular case, a girls' school in Ilulu (240 students) and a school in Lindi (850 students). These facilities are used by several schools in both locations, reaching a total of more than 2,400 students .

A complete installation consists of a solar system, 20 workstations, internet connection and a printer and costs € 25,000.

We are delighted that our campaign has more than succeeded in making this possible at at least one location. We therefore thank all our sponsors, guests, artists and everyone else for their contributions (however small)!
