Energy storage: the next breakthrough in the energy transition

Energy storage is a key technology for the energy transition. In making the energy supply more sustainable, there is more demand for different applications of energy storage, but also for new technologies. As a knowledge country, the Netherlands contributes to energy storage technology developments. Although there is no large battery factory in the Netherlands (yet), Dutch universities, knowledge institutions, start-ups and scale-ups are working hard on new energy storage technologies.

In this webinar, the Royal Society of Engineers KIVI and Energy Storage NL take you through the latest developments within the Netherlands. Several technical universities and companies will show what energy storage technology they are working on. Below you will find the full programme of the webinar.

Summerheat: The smartest innovation is underground.

Summerheat makes sustainable heat storage scalable and feasible.
The cheapest energy is renewable energy. When there is enough sun or wind, there is an abundance of it, and heating your home is almost free.
On other days, there is a shortage, and then we often use polluting energy sources anyway. What if we could store that abundance?

EIRES TU/e The answer to the energy transistion

The Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES) is TU/e's answer to the broad, multidisciplinary question that is the energy transition.

Elestor B.V. Electricity Storage The choice for hydrogen and bromine

The 'hydrogen bromine flow battery' is an innovative battery that enables a new and affordable way of storing energy. This allows solar and wind energy to become competitive with fossil fuels. A consortium, consisting of Witteveen+Bos, Elestor BV, Energieonderzoek Centrum Nederland (ECN) and the Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen (HAN), is using this pilot to investigate how the battery can be deployed on a larger scale. The pilot is a first in Europe.

The hydrogen bromide flow battery developed by Elestor BV makes it possible to store electricity, as generated by renewable energy sources, at a fraction of the cost of current technologies. Another important aspect of the concept is that the desired power [kW] and capacity [kWh] can be sized independently. In Elestor's flow battery, the two chemical components are each in their own closed circuit. The components are separated by a selective membrane, which allows only protons to pass through.

University of Twente Advanced battery technology

The storage of energy is one of the key challenges in the energy transition. Sustainable, high-density and flexible batteries are needed to balance the fluctuating production of renewable power with demand. The Twente Centre for Advanced Battery Technology brings together all battery research activities at the University of Twente. The goal is to advance research to realize breakthrough solutions for next-generation battery technology in a systemic approach and by addressing the complete battery value chain.
