International contacts through ISSMGE
The Geotechnical Section is not only active in the Netherlands, but has also had international contacts in the framework of the 'International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering' (ISSMGE) through the Dutch section NSSMGE (Netherlands Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering) since its inception. All members of the Geotechnical Engineering Section are automatically members of the NSSMGE, there are no additional costs involved.
Members hereby enjoy the following benefits:
- regular updates on international activities, conferences and publications as well as information provision via an ISSMGE bulletin;
- participation in 'Technical Committees' of the ISSMGE, which publish state-of-the-art reports and guidelines and carry out standards preparation work with an international team;
- submission of papers for conferences organised by the ISSMGE;
- platform for establishing international contacts and exchanging knowledge and experience with more than 18,000 peers in over 80 countries.

ECSMGE2024
From 26 to 30 August, the 18th European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ECSMGE24) took place in Lisbon, organised by ISSMGE in cooperation with the Sociedade Portuguesa de Geotecnia (SPG). This conference brought together practice and science in the field of geotechnical engineering.
Netherlands was well represented, with contributions from Fugro, Deltares, Cofra and Geobest, among others. The conference provided a platform for discussions and announcements of international geotechnical events.
On behalf of KIVI Geotechnics, Patrick IJnsen cast his vote at the Member Society Assembly, where it was decided that the 19th ECSMGE will take place in Istanbul in 2028.
First, Vienna will host the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in June 2026. KIVI Geotechnical Engineering will share more news about this soon.
