Rail systems at the heart of mobility

Rail systems are indispensable in today's era to help handle mobility needs and ensure accessibility. Rail systems encompass different engineering fields with diverse disciplines.

Precisely because of the pluriformity of the field, those working in those various disciplines within the rail sector are more than welcome in the Rail Systems Department, which was set up in 2007, with engineering being the binding factor.

From an engineering perspective, the focus is on the following themes:

  • heavy rail, light rail, tram and metro systems, high-speed lines, magnetic levitation;
  • track, substructure and superstructure and structures;
  • security and control
  • equipment and interfaces with infrastructure
  • safety and operation;
  • transfer systems with associated logistics.

Mission

The Rail Division of KIVI is a meeting place for people interested in rail technology in a broad sense.

Mission rail department

On the creation of the Rail Department

From the experience of members of the various KIVI divisions, who felt that they did not sufficiently meet the need to gather and share knowledge and lacked the opportunity to network, specifically in the rail-related sector, the need arose for a body that could provide just that.

As a medium for this, the first step was therefore not to create a separate department within KIVI, but a platform positioned between the departments that focuses specifically on the knowledge, technology and working field of rail systems: complementary to the existing departments and professional groups and focused on the rail sector. The founding meeting took place on 7 November 2007. In the course of 2008, this form was changed from Platform to Department, thus occupying a clearer place within KIVI.
