Engineer

An engineer

The Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI) is the professional association for and of engineers. KIVI is committed to the engineer, but what does an engineer actually do? And how does one become an engineer? Discover the versatility and value of engineering!

An engineer is a highly skilled professional who applies science and technology to devise practical solutions to complex challenges. Engineers are the builders of the future: they design, analyse and optimise systems, products and processes that have a positive impact on the world around us. Whether in renewable energy, smart technology or infrastructure, engineers are everywhere.

What sectors does an engineer work in?

Engineers have a vital role in society. They work in various sectors, such as:

  • Construction and infrastructure: Bridges, buildings and roads that combine safety and sustainability.
  • Energy transition: Innovations in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydrogen.
  • High-tech and ICT: Development of smart devices, AI, and robots.
  • Health technology: Design of medical devices and biotechnology for better care.
  • Sustainability and environment: Tackling climate change with innovative solutions.

With a career in engineering, you will contribute directly to a better world!

How do you become an engineer?

Becoming an engineer starts with a technical education at a university (such as a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering) or college (hbo). Want to see all possible fields of study? Click on the link.

Still not sure which direction you want to take? Book a session with one of our coaches.

KIVI organises between 300-400 activities a year. From networking drinks, lectures, symposiums to webinars and company days. As a KIVI Student Member, you have free access to most activities. You will thus easily come into contact with engineers from different directions and with different experiences.

The title stands for scientifically trained engineer.

Ing. (Engineer)

This title is for graduates of an engineering course at a college of higher professional education (HBO) level in the Netherlands.

The title represents a practically trained engineer.

MSc (Master of Science)

This title is for graduates of a master's programme at a technical university or scientific institution at WO level in the Netherlands.

The title is internationally recognised and often used instead of "Ir".

BEng (Bachelor of Engineering)

This title is for graduates of technical colleges.

The title is the English-language variant of "Ing".

BSc (Bachelor of Science)

This title is for graduates of technical courses at WO Bachelor level.

PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)

The title is for engineers with a PhD in a technical field.

PDEng (Professional Doctorate in Engineering

The title is for engineers who have completed a two-year postgraduate course at a technical university.

CEng (Chartered Engineer)

A title used internationally. It is a British qualification recognised as a high level of technical professionalism.

Eur Ing (European Engineer)

A title used internationally within Europe. The title is awarded by the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI).
