Electrical engineering (field)

Areas of focus

The fields of interest of the Electrical Engineering Department are

  1. Electrical Energy focusing on renewable energy with specific topics such as High Voltage Engineering, Grid Management, DC (direct current) and Storage (storage of electrical energy)
  2. Embedded Systems with application in the Internet of Things and telecommunications, such as LiFi the new international standard for wireless internet via light.

History of electrical engineering

2015 marked the 110th anniversary of Electrical Energy Engineering in Delft.

Electrical engineering there was recognised as an independent profession only late (in 1905), but 110 years later, Electrical Energy Engineering is fast becoming the lynchpin of energy supply.

The entire history can be read in the book "Spanning & Sensation" 110 years of Delft Electrical Energy Engineering

Similar books on geljkspanning and smart grids can be found at Onderzoeksboek.nl

The mission:of the DC Voltage Foundation is to encourage the development and use of DC technology facilitate the pursuit of a smart energy future and vision:

Promote the use of DC-related technology through innovative energy projects. Facilitate a revolution in energy transition by connecting people and organisations through a common interest in DC. Educate stakeholders by collecting, processing and sharing knowledge about DC.

Knowledge bases in Electrical engineering

The seven online knowledge bases E-installation on NEN 1010, NEN 3140, NEN 4288 Power Quality, ATEX, Switchgear and Distribution Devices, Machine Safety and Renewable Energy contain:

  • a wealth of practical and up-to-date expert knowledge
  • standards and regulations translated into practice
  • causes of and solutions to technical problems
  • calculation modules, tables, checklists and other tools
  • description of safety risks
  • best practices
  • frequently asked questions

DC Technology

In everyday life, we already use much more direct current without realising it, such as charging mobile phones, using electric hand tools, energy-efficient extraction systems in homes, PV solar cells. Furthermore, HVDC direct current for efficient transport over high-voltage lines is already unimaginable.

By applying the direct current principle even more, energy systems will become more sustainable faster and the reliability of the future power grid being Smart Grids, affordable in construction and efficient in transport of electrical energy will become higher.

High-voltage grids

A reliable electricity grid is a necessity for ensuring security of supply and continuity in electricity supply.

An essential part is the high-voltage grid for the transmission of electrical energy. This sector employs thousands of people.

Internet of Things (IoT) Embedded Systems

The latest developments and innovations in IoT can be followed on "News on IoT & Embedded Systems".

Grid management in the Netherlands

A proactive approach to the operation and management of electricity grids is essential. Netbeheer Nederland is the trade association of all energy network operators, which stands for an accessible, reliable and affordable energy system that enables the transition to a sustainable energy supply.

Storage (electrical energy storage)

The storage of electrical energy is needed to ensure security of supply during periods of (too) little wind and sunshine and thus bridge them. A revolutionary development can be expected for the home battery, for which standard components have already been developed In several projects, this will be electric energy storage in conjunction with (temporary) storage in electric vehicles (cars) and battery stations at transformer stations in the district.

What is LiFi?

Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) is a wireless internet connection that works on the basis of LEDs. The system, developed by German professor Harald Haas in 2011, is equivalent to WIFI, but could work 100 times faster.
