KIVI-Mechanics awards
The Mechanics Department annually awards 2 prizes for the best PhDs within fluid and solid mechanics. The awards are organised in collaboration with two research schools: the Graduate School of Engineering Mechanics (EM) and the J.M. Burgers Centre (JMBC).

Biezeno Price
The prize in solid state mechanics is named after Prof Dr Ir C.B. Biezeno, who is one of the founders of solid state mechanics in the Netherlands. His most important work, the book Technische Dynamik (written together with Richard Grammel) was in his time a standard reference work for others in solid state mechanics and has been translated into several languages.
Winner of 2021
Dr Meghshyam Shisode is the winner of the 2021 Biezeno Award for his PhD thesis in Engineering Mechanics. His PhD thesis is titled: Friction modelling of coated sheets for forming applications.

Hoogendoorn Price
This award in fluid mechanics is named after Prof Ir C.J. Hoogendoorn for his prominent research in heat transport. He also wrote citation classics on multiphase flows during his time as researchers at the Royal Dutch Shell. Furthermore, he is one of the founders of the JMBC.
Winner of 2021
Dr Sina Tajfirooz is the winner of the 2021 Hoogendoorn Award for his PhD thesis in Fluid Mechanics. The title of his PhD thesis was: Numerical Methods for Dynamics of Particles in Magnetized Liquids.
Why these prices?
These awards came about because the Mechanics Department wanted to highlight the research done at universities, in the fields of solid and fluid mechanics. It is a way to strengthen the relationship between PhDs, research schools (EM and JMBC) and KIVI. This makes it easier for companies and society at large, to learn from the results of these promotis. Finally, the awards also aim to create an incentive for students to study mechanics.
Eligible
Participation is open to all PhD students who have completed their PhD either in solid state mechanics or fluid mechanics. The criteria is that the thesis has both scientific excellence, as well as industrial relevance/applicability. Added value is attributed to factors such as: originality and inventiveness, the degree of possibility of application in industry, simplicity while maintaining essential features and lastly: sustainability.
Information on nominations, the selection procedure and the award ceremony can be found in the regulations and flyer.
