Standards and guidelines

Standards are agreements that market parties voluntarily make with each other about the quality and safety of their products, services and processes. For Dutch geotechnical engineering, the European standard Eurocode 7 is particularly important.

GWW standards overview (2018)

The GWW Standards Overview lists the NEN standards that are applicable in ground, water and road construction. Use the overview to look up the specifications of the standards on the NEN site.

Design guideline stability embankments (2014)

In 2012, a design methodology for stability screens for the purpose of inward macrostability for soil dykes was developed. This was found suitable for use in similar complex geotechnical situations in early 2013. Explanations of the methodology can be found in the April 2014 Geotechnical Journal.

Tunnel regulations: situation since the new WARVW (2014)

Engineering consultancy Movares has collected all laws and regulations on tunnels since the new WARVW.

Is Eurocode 7 finished? (2013)

This question is addressed in an article in Vakblad Geotechniek, one year after the introduction of Eurocode 7. Further harmonisation is being pursued for Eurocode 7 and the aim is to improve user-friendliness.

National working agreements on cables and pipes (2013)

The Municipal Platform Cables and Pipelines (GPKL) has posted on its website all published working agreements around cables and pipelines in the public underground space. These are so-called good practices: various guidelines, manuals and working methods.

Classification of soil (2011)

An article about the classification of soil according to the Eurocode appeared in the Dutch Geotechnical Journal in 2010.

Eurocode 8 also important for the Netherlands (2009)

This article in Vakblad Geotechniek explains the significance of Eurocode 8: design and calculation of earthquake-resistant structures.

Soil Quality Decree (BBK)

The Soil Quality Decree came into force in 2008. Its aim is sustainable soil management. On the Soil Quality Decree Knowledge Square, Bodem+ collects and provides access to all relevant information on the Soil Quality Decree.

Building Regulations Information Systems (BRIS)

BRIS develops, supplies and maintains interactive software programmes that help to correctly apply Dutch building regulations and related information. Among other things, BRIS distributes CUR publications digitally.

NEN

The Netherlands Standards Organisation (NEN) supervises and stimulates the development of standards. This includes the implementation of the Eurocodes in a national context. On 31 March 2010, NEN withdrew the former TGB standards and replaced them with Eurocodes.
