Underground Construction

File on underground construction

Pressure on space in the Netherlands is intense. Roads are full, cities are getting congested and yet demand for new buildings, transport and utilities continues to rise. Meanwhile, we also long for more greenery, less horizon pollution and traffic jam-free driving. At first glance, contradictory desires, but when space on the flat surface is inadequate, it can help to go in depth.

Generic knowledge

Information and literature that is overarching for underground construction or does not directly belong in one of the other subtopics. Examples include handbooks, knowledge programmes, guidelines, studies and background information.

Drilling tunnels

Drilling tunnels in the soft, Dutch soil was virgin territory until the late 20th century, but several drill tunnels are now in use or under construction. Drilling in the Dutch subsurface is complex and presents challenges. There is therefore constant research into improving drilling tunnel techniques.

Zinc tunnels

Tunnel construction often uses the immersion technique. The method was more or less born in the Netherlands. The Maas Tunnel (1942) is the oldest European immersed tunnel. Meanwhile, immersed tunnels are a Dutch export product.

Cables and pipes

Cables and pipelines are vital for providing basic services. The Dutch underground is full of them. How do we ensure proper incorporation and sustainable growth of this underground infrastructure?
