Contribution of the Geo-Impulse programme to the communication around the construction of a fully automatic car salvage yard in The Hague

At the Ingenieursbureau Den Haag, the Geo-Impuls working group 'Geocommunicatie in projecten' has been working on communicating the geotechnical risks and opportunities of the construction of a Fully Automated Auto Salvage plus the restoration of the city canal on the Veenkade in The Hague.

To improve the traffic situation on the Noordwal-Veenkade, the municipality of The Hague decided to build an underground, fully automatic car salvage yard (VAB). This brought geotechnical risks and opportunities. Geo-Impuls helped to clearly communicate these risks and opportunities to all target groups involved.

Role Geo-Impuls

The working group helped the municipality of The Hague create and implement a geocommunication plan. This plan
clearly set out what the geotechnical risks and opportunities were when building the VAB. In doing so, the working group took into account the interests and way of communicating to the various target groups involved.

It turned out to be an important and extensive task, as the working group came to more than 50 stakeholders and target groups during a survey. Besides local residents and 'ordinary' road users, these included the archaeology department of the municipality of The Hague, entrepreneurs on the Veenkade, taxi companies, tour operators, energy companies and emergency services.

Results

Four workshops were organised during the project. These involved the VAB project's project manager, structural engineer, geotechnical consultant, environmental manager and communications manager. The presentations can be viewed in bundled form.
