History of Young KIVI Engineers
In 2013, a group of young engineers came together and rejoined the YKE department. Since that time, new directors have been joining all the time and a piece of history has emerged. Some highlights that the YKE board has achieved and experienced this period:
- Market research YKE members: A market research on the needs of young engineers and how YKE can match them through the three pillars (i) Professional knowledge; (i) Personal skills; and (iii) Network:
- Professional knowledge - Portfolio Management: A programme to manage advice on political and social issues by establishing contact between politics and KIVI professional departments;
- Personal skills - YKE Growth Programme: A recurring evening programme to help young engineers identify where they want to grow in their career and which necessary skills can best be further developed using the PREFER test and renowned KIVI coaches;
- Personal skills - YKE Talent Programme: A recurring intensive annual programme to help young engineers further develop their growth goals following the YKE Growth Programme through coaching with renowned KIVI coaches and master classes. It also links up with KIVI's Chartered and Incorporated Engineer programme;
- Network - Dutch and European engineering networks: An extensive Dutch and European engineering network, which YKE is a member of, in order to increase the network of young engineers.
- Mission, Vission and Strategy: YKE's long-term and short-term goals on an A4;
- Drafting online roadmap: A comprehensive document in which governance processes and policies are written down and maintained;
- OPD tool: An investment of departmental assets in the Online Professional Development (OPD) tool developed by KIVI. This tool allows students and young engineers to shape their careers;
- EYE Eindhoven May 2019: A conference for 110 participants from all over Europe organised by the YKE Board and its active members;
- 2nd Friday and KIVI Innovation Drinks: A knowledge and social-oriented event series by giving lectures and workshops combined with drinks in Eindhoven, Delft and Twente;
- Drafting opinion piece: Drafted an opinion piece, together with KIVI's main board, on the future of YKE;
- Active member status: This status was introduced to involve young members in an accessible way and make the board itself more compact and decisive;
- Introduction of official General Members Meeting: This meeting was introduced to officially appoint the young directors according to KIVI statutes;
- Increase age definition: From 30 to 35 years. All KIVI members in this age category are automatically members of YKE.
In 2004, KIVI and NIRIA merged into KIVI NIRIA. Within KIVI before 2004, the regionally oriented Active Young Members (AJL) department existed. This department existed for the four regions based on the wind directions North, East, South and West. In 2004, North was the most active. At NIRIA, the Young NIRIA group existed and there was a split between student members and professional members. The best of both associations in terms of youth was combined around the merger. After the merger, the youth structure was set up so that young engineers, Young KIVI Engineers (YKE), and students, KIVI Students (KS), have their own representation through a board. For the students, the focus is on a board for each of the three technical universities, KIVI Students Twente (KST), Eindhoven (KSE) and Delft (KSD). For the young engineering graduates, a national board was established, that of YKE. As the North region was an existing large group, it was defined as a separate group; Young KIVI North (YKN). In 2014, the name KIVI NIRIA was changed to KIVI. The Young KIVI Noord group did not follow up during this period.
